I would agree with your husband that rowing is quite inclusive at grass roots level and other sports are worse. And yes women do get scouted for GB squad (and other squads) just not at HRR as most of them competing have already been discovered. However as you go up the sport all the power and decision-making is in the hands of men. There were no female coaches at the Olympics. All the Chief Coaches of the squads are men. The Performance Director is male. The Chairman of HRR is male. The Oxford/Cambridge boat race is all male (although I believe that the Women's boat race will be happening along the same course in 2015).

But this was intended to be a feminist analysis of a male space, just using HRR as an example. I could have used any number of sporting events or other male dominated events to illustrate the points I was trying to make. Rowing was never really meant to be the focus (although I could do a feminist critique of that if you wish ;-))scallopsrgreathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07769365210807013344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6890545570826444764.post-6868969673164234902013-07-10T21:43:16.594+01:002013-07-10T21:43:16.594+01:00I live in Henley and I know the vibe. He would say that rowing is in general one of the few sports where men's and women's teams train and race in close proximity and it's seen as having a pleasant mixed atmosphere. The women do get scouted for Team GB and are very successful in events like the Olympics. Other sports are far more exclusionary.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
